50th Anniversary Event Update for Walt Disney World
An Extended Celebration at Walt Disney World
Disney has begun dripping information about its 50th Anniversary celebration to begin this year. The event will last 18 months, which will overlap with another major anniversary, the 40th Anniversary of EPCOT. Since EPCOT is already in the midst of some exciting changes, we know we are in for an extended multi-year celebration.
That event most likely launches, in October of 2022. One of the significant highlights of The World’s Most Magical Celebration will be a permanent change to the exterior of Spaceship Earth. The iconic geodesic sphere at the park’s north entrance will sparkle with thousands of illuminated optics that twinkle like stars and connect to each other.
Beacons of Magic
EPCOT is not the only Disney parks icon to get an overlay in honor of Walt Disney World’s 50th Anniversary celebration. As you would expect, All four park icons are joining in as giant “beacons of magic”. I

Each will be enhanced with sparkling lights and EARidescent color. That’s actually the name of the official color for The World’s Most Magical Celebration!
There is Still Uncertainty
The castle and the Hollywood Tower will also feature gold blunting to accent the changes in the upcoming look throughout the celebration year. This is the first big news about the highly anticipated event.
Much mystery has surrounded the impending celebration in the midst of the COVID pandemic. Disney was forced to halt and even discard some big plans for the near future.
Disney recently prioritized some projects for completion albeit at later than expected dates. Space 220, the new themed dining experience at EPCOT’s Mission Space is two years late in opening.
Some previously announced plans such as a Mary Poppins expansion at the United Kingdom Pavilion, seem to be scrapped. Other projects like the Moana-inspired walkthrough The Journey of Water have slowed.
Mickey and Minnie in Custom Costumes
In the latest announcement by Disney regarding the World’s Most Magical Celebration very few details emerged. They promise more information soon. Until then we know that Mickey and Minnie will sport the traditional custom celebration costumes in addition to the change to the theme park icons.
In addition, the new video hyping the big anniversary event puts a definite emphasis on family which is a recognizable departure from recent years. We look forward to finding out more as new information emerges.
